For patients with severe dry eye, corneal ulcers, or other severe corneal disease, amniotic membranes are a wonderful therapeutic option and have been used since the 90's.

Amniotic membranes are derived from fetal amniotic tissue and contain a high concentration of cytokines and growth factors. The benefits are profound in that they contain anti-infective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-scarring effects.

Amniotic membranes are placed directly on the eye and a bandage contact lens is put on top of this to keep it in place. The membrane will gradually dissolve over the course of 3-5 days and then the bandage contact lens can be removed.
